South Africa Launches Solar-Powered EV Fleet

Key Figures & Findings:
The Clicks Group and United Pharmaceutical Distributors (UPD), in partnership with Everlectric and Investec Sustainable Solutions, have unveiled South Africa’s first zero-emission electric vehicle (EV) fleet with solar-powered refrigeration. The 42 Maxus eDeliver 3 panel vans, manufactured by SAIC Maxus, will be deployed to Gauteng and Western Cape regions, ensuring temperature-controlled pharmaceutical deliveries.
Statistics & Insights:
Each van has a 220–250 km range, a one-ton capacity, and 6.5m³ of refrigerated space. Over its lifespan, the fleet is projected to save 2.4 million liters of diesel and reduce 6.3 million kg of CO₂ emissions.
Future Implications:
With dedicated solar infrastructure at UPD depots, this move could lead to broader commercial EV adoption in South Africa, cutting costs and accelerating green logistics nationwide.
