South Africa’s 120MW Solar Project Begins

Key Figures & Findings: Teraco, South Africa's largest data center operator, has launched construction of its ambitious 120MW solar PV power plant in the Free State, set to be operational by late 2026. Spearheading this project is CEO Jan Hnizdo, who describes it as a critical step in establishing a sustainable energy source for Teraco’s next-generation cloud and AI computing solutions. With Eskom’s support for grid capacity and a strong partnership with energy firm JUWI, Teraco aims to manage renewable energy needs in an increasingly power-hungry data sector. Hnizdo emphasizes the necessity of renewable investments to address South Africa’s energy challenges and to make data centers more sustainable.
Statistics & Insights: The solar plant is expected to produce over 354,000 MWh annually, using wheeling arrangements to transfer power across multiple municipalities, including Ekurhuleni and Cape Town. Teraco will own the entire solar facility, ensuring control over its renewable energy production.
Future Implications: This project could pave the way for future multi-municipal renewable energy wheeling projects in South Africa, helping to attract new investments and positioning South Africa as a competitive hub for renewable-powered data centers. If successful, the project could inspire similar initiatives across the country by 2028.
