South Africa’s Dayizenza Mall Goes Solar

Key Figures & Findings:
Neosun Energy has delivered a 1 MW solar photovoltaic (PV) plant for Dayizenza Mall in Nelspruit, South Africa. This on-grid solar system, comprising 1,706 solar panels and seven inverters, will generate over 1.6 GWh of electricity annually, significantly reducing the mall's reliance on traditional energy sources. Jeanine Jackson, Head of Sales at Neosun South Africa, emphasized the mall's commitment to lowering its environmental impact and fostering sustainability in the commercial sector. The project symbolizes a critical step toward clean energy adoption in a region with high electricity costs and an unstable grid.

Statistics & Insights:
The solar system will generate over 1.6 GWh of electricity annually, equating to a daily production of 4.38 MWh. The project, with a $9 million savings estimate over its lifetime, achieves a remarkable 53% internal rate of return (IRR) and a one-year payback period due to South Africa’s Section 12B tax incentive. It will also mitigate 25,807 tons of CO2 emissions.

Future Implications:
The success of this installation could encourage other commercial entities in South Africa to adopt solar energy, addressing rising energy costs and grid instability. Such projects could play a pivotal role in boosting energy independence and enhancing sustainability in rural and urban areas alike.
