South Africa’s Doornhoek Solar Project Advances

Key Figures & Findings: AMEA Power, a UAE-based renewable energy developer with a growing presence across Africa, has secured a major milestone with its 120 MW Doornhoek Solar PV Project in South Africa. The project, located in the Northwest Province near Klerksdorp, is AMEA Power’s first operational asset in the country and was awarded under Bid Window 6 of South Africa’s Renewable Energy Independent Power Producer Procurement Programme (REIPPPP). According to AMEA, the USD 120 million initiative reaffirms its ambition to scale its clean energy footprint in high-growth African markets. The project was recently named IJGlobal’s Renewable Deal of the Year, which underscored its significance in the regional energy landscape.
Statistics & Insights: Once operational by December 2025, the Doornhoek project will deliver 325 GWh of clean electricity annually, powering around 97,000 South African households. It is expected to offset 330,000 tonnes of CO₂ emissions each year—equivalent to removing 70,000 passenger cars from the road.
Future Implications: If delivered on schedule, the project could significantly contribute to South Africa’s Just Energy Transition strategy while helping diversify grid supply and reducing coal dependency. Its success would also strengthen AMEA Power’s credibility in bidding for future REIPPPP windows beyond 2026.
