South Africa’s New Battery Storage Milestone

Key Figures & Findings: ABO Energy, a renewable energy company that specializes in the development and construction of wind and solar power projects, as well as battery and hydrogen initiatives across South Africa, has finalized the sale of two battery energy storage systems (BESS) to Électricité de France (EDF). The projects are located in the Northern Cape and North West provinces, marking EDF's strategic entry under South Africa’s Battery Energy Storage Independent Power Producer Procurement Programme (BESIPPPP).
Statistics & Insights: The two standalone systems each boast a capacity of 77 MW and a storage capability of 308 MWh. Financial closure for these projects was achieved in late 2023, marking a milestone for energy resilience in South Africa.
Future Implications:
The projects could stabilize South Africa’s energy grid by 2025, reducing dependence on inconsistent energy sources. ABO Energy’s 5 GW pipeline highlights its commitment to advancing renewable energy and storage solutions in Africa.
