South Africa, Seriti Launch First Turbine

Key Figures & Findings: South African mining and energy firm Seriti Green has installed the first wind turbine at its 155 MW Ummbila Emoyeni Wind Energy Facility in Mpumalanga, marking a major milestone for the province’s Just Energy Transition.  The facility represents a pivot toward cleaner energy, part of Seriti’s 2021 acquisition of Windlab South Africa and its broader goal to offset coal emissions and diversify its energy portfolio. According to the company, the initiative will directly contribute to reducing carbon intensity across its operations and the wider energy sector.

Statistics & Insights: The turbine stands 221 metres tall, comprising a 130-metre tower and 91-metre-long blades. The project will eventually generate 155 MW of renewable power, with phased turbine installations underway.

Future Implications: If all planned turbines are commissioned by 2026, Seriti Green’s wind facility could significantly contribute to the decarbonization of South Africa’s coal-dependent industrial base. The company has also pledged to involve local communities through job creation, procurement, and economic participation.
