Stratek Global Plans SMR Expansion

Key Figures & Findings: South African nuclear technology firm Stratek Global has partnered with France's Groupe Albatros to conduct feasibility studies for deploying high-temperature gas-cooled small modular reactors (SMRs) in Africa and the Middle East. The HTMR-100 reactor, designed in Pretoria, does not require a large water source for cooling, setting it apart from traditional nuclear plants. Stratek Global Chairman Kelvin Kemm emphasized its potential, stating, “We can put our HTMR-100 reactor absolutely anywhere, water or no water.” The collaboration aims to identify viable sites in South Africa, Nigeria, Namibia, and Oman.

Statistics & Insights: The HTMR-100 design generates 100 MW of heat and 35 MW of electricity, leveraging tristructural isotropic (TRISO) fuel. The South African government halted its Pebble Bed Modular Reactor (PBMR) program in 2010, but Stratek Global continues developing similar technologies.

Future Implications: If successful, the feasibility studies could lead to the deployment of SMR by the late 2020s, supporting energy security and industrial growth. However, regulatory approvals and financing hurdles will be key factors in determining project viability.
