Sungrow, Globeleq Seal Red Sands BESS Deal

Key Figures & Findings: Sungrow, a global provider of PV inverters and energy storage solutions, and Globeleq, an African independent power producer, have signed a 15-year supply and service agreement for the Red Sands Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) project in South Africa. Located in the Northern Cape, this BESS installation will feature 153 MW of capacity and 612 MWh of storage. The project is part of South Africa’s inaugural Battery Energy Storage Independent Power Producer Procurement Programme (BESIPPPP) and will connect to the grid via the Eskom Garona substation. Both companies have committed to long-term technical collaboration to ensure efficient project performance.

Statistics & Insights: The Red Sands BESS, covering 5 hectares (12 acres), is expected to achieve financial close in 2025, with operations set for 2027. Once completed, it will be one of Africa’s largest standalone battery energy storage systems, contributing to grid stability and supporting renewable energy integration.

Future Implications: If successfully implemented by 2027, the Red Sands BESS could enhance South Africa’s grid reliability and pave the way for more large-scale energy storage projects across the continent. This initiative may also signal a shift toward diversified energy solutions amid ongoing supply challenges.
