Tanzania, AFD Launch 100MWp Solar

Key Figures & Findings: The Government of the United Republic of Tanzania, through its state utility TANESCO, has secured financing from the Agence Française de Développement (AFD) to support the design, construction, and installation of a 100MWp Solar PV Plant in the Shinyanga Region. The funds is to be used for procuring eligible EPC contractors for Phase II of the project, a critical component of Tanzania’s broader strategy to meet its universal energy access target. The Tanzania Electric Supply Company Limited (TANESCO) will serve as the Project Executing Agency. This initiative marks the second phase of a long-term solar development roadmap envisioned by the government and supported by international development partners.

Statistics & Insights: The proposed solar plant is expected to generate approximately 182,500 MWh annually—enough to power 50,000 rural households. This could reduce over 120,000 metric tons of CO₂ emissions per year. The project site in Shinyanga has been strategically chosen to stabilize the energy supply in Tanzania’s northwestern corridor and support industrial and agricultural hubs in the region.

Future Implications: If successfully executed by early 2026, this project could accelerate Tanzania’s transition from fossil fuel reliance to renewable energy dominance. It may also strengthen France-Tanzania development ties and enhance TANESCO’s capacity to manage large-scale solar deployment.
