Tanzania Hydropower Hits 2.1 GW Milestone

Key Figures & Findings: The Julius Nyerere Hydropower Project (JNHPP) in Tanzania has reached a significant milestone with the full activation of all nine turbines, each producing 235MW, culminating in a total capacity of 2,115MW. This achievement was announced by Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Energy Dr. Doto Biteko, who emphasized the project's role in enhancing the nation's power generation capacity. The JNHPP, located at Stiegler's Gorge on the Rufiji River, is a flagship initiative by the Tanzania Electric Supply Company (TANESCO), aimed at bolstering the country's energy infrastructure.
Statistics & Insights: The project, with an investment of $2.6 billion, has received 99.5% of its funding from the Tanzanian government. The first turbine became operational in February 2024, and the subsequent activation of all turbines marks a pivotal advancement in Tanzania's energy sector.
Future Implications: With the increased power production capacity, Tanzania is poised to commence electricity exports to neighboring Zambia. Ongoing construction of transmission lines in both countries is set to facilitate this energy trade, potentially strengthening regional cooperation and economic growth.
