Tanzania, Puma Energy Commission Rooftop Solar

Key Figures & Findings: Tanzania has commissioned a 570kW rooftop solar plant at the Alliance One Tobacco Tanzania Limited (AOTTL) factory in Morogoro, about 200 km from Dar es Salaam. Developed through a 10-year Power Purchase Agreement between Puma Energy and AOTTL, the project marks a strategic shift in industrial energy sourcing within the country. The grid-tied facility features 1,296 high-efficiency solar modules and six inverters, tailored to the factory’s peak production season. Fatma Abdallah, Managing Director of Puma Energy Tanzania, described the plant as a pivotal achievement in decarbonizing industrial operations and promoting sustainable business practices.

Statistics & Insights: Construction of the system began in March 2025 and was completed within a month, with operations starting on May 4. The plant carries a 30-year performance guarantee and is designed to deliver uninterrupted power, especially between May and October when the factory operates at full capacity.

Future Implications: If scaled nationally, this model could significantly reduce grid stress during industrial demand peaks and support Tanzania’s goal of becoming a regional leader in sustainable manufacturing. Similar PPAs could emerge across other sectors by late 2026, driven by cost-efficiency and emission reduction targets.
