Taraba, ANI, Australia Power Households

Key Figures & Findings: The Australian High Commission and Africa Nature Investors (ANI) Foundation have jointly delivered an off-grid solar electrification project in Taraba State’s Mayo-Selbe community. The intervention, fully funded through Australia’s Direct Aid Program, was implemented in partnership with Australian energy tech firm Okra Solar and launched at the palace of the local monarch. Officials from ANI, Nigeria’s National Park Service, and the Taraba State government described the initiative as a strategic model for improving rural livelihoods while protecting Gashaka Gumti National Park.

Statistics & Insights: The pilot phase electrified 63 households using modular solar kits. Gashaka Gumti Park is home to Nigeria’s highest mountain and over 3,000 square kilometers of protected habitat.

Future Implications: If scaled to neighboring communities by 2026, the project could reduce pressure on parkland resources and strengthen Australia’s development engagement in Nigeria. It may also support sustainable tourism and economic activity across Taraba’s rural corridor.
