Togo, BOAD Launch Rural Electrification

Key Figures & Findings: Togo’s Ministry of Energy, through its Agency for Rural Electrification and Renewable Energies (AT2ER), has issued a tender to electrify 172 rural communities as part of the country’s goal to achieve universal access by 2030. The initiative is backed by a CFA6 billion ($9.7 million) loan from the West African Development Bank (BOAD), a regional financial institution focused on development across the West African Economic and Monetary Union. The project aligns with Togo’s broader electrification framework, which includes ongoing efforts like the Lomé Electricity Network Expansion Project (PEREL). Bidding is open until September 5, 2025, with implementation set to begin in November.
Statistics & Insights: The project is expected to generate 9.3 GWh annually and improve electricity access for over 35,000 people. It will also create more than 600 jobs during the 18-month implementation period.
Future Implications: If executed as planned, the initiative is expected to significantly reduce rural energy poverty and strengthen grid infrastructure by 2027. Additional investments under Togo’s energy master plan could follow based on performance and regional development priorities.
