UAE, Madagascar Ink Solar Deal

Key Figures & Findings: UAE-based Global South Utilities (GSU) has signed a major agreement with Madagascar’s Ministry of Hydrocarbons and Energy to develop a 50 MW solar PV plant paired with a 25 MWh battery energy storage system in Moramanga. This partnership lays the groundwork for a formal Power Purchase Agreement with JIRAMA, Madagascar’s national utility. GSU, led by Managing Director Ali Alshimmari, focuses on expanding reliable energy access across developing markets through sustainable infrastructure investment. This collaboration reflects a broader trend of UAE-backed investment in Africa’s energy transition.
Statistics & Insights: The Moramanga project is set to be completed within 12 months. A second agreement outlines feasibility studies for up to 250 MW of future capacity, jointly explored by GSU and Malagasy authorities.
Future Implications: If feasibility outcomes are favorable, Madagascar could scale up local renewable capacity and reduce fossil dependency by 2026. This would enhance energy security and grid resilience across the Antananarivo Interconnected Network.
