Uasin Gishu Launches Rural Electrification Drive

Key Figures & Findings: The County Government of Uasin Gishu, in partnership with the Rural Electrification and Renewable Energy Corporation (REREC), has launched the Stima Mashinani initiative to transform rural electrification and promote 24-hour economic activity. Governor Dr. Jonathan Bii, unveiling the project in Eldoret, emphasized its alignment with his Nguzo Kumi development blueprint, which prioritizes socio-economic empowerment. Phase one will connect over 600 households across six sub-counties, including areas like Lelmokwo and Kabiyet, bringing electricity to communities that have waited decades for grid access. REREC’s Matching Fund Programme underpins this effort, doubling county investments to accelerate electrification.

Statistics & Insights: The county targets increasing electricity access from 65% to 95% by 2030. This goal is supported by $420,000 raised under the Matching Fund Programme in 2023/2024, which enabled 39 electrification projects. Under national regulations, each sub-county receives up to $35,000 in matching funds per year.

Future Implications:  If successful, Stima Mashinani could catalyze rural economic growth, fostering trade, agriculture, and security through better energy access.
