Uganda Partners with Gridworks for Power Boost

Key Figures & Findings:
Gridworks, an investment and development platform focused on enhancing electricity networks across Africa. , has joined forces with Uganda’s government to deliver the Mbale-Bulambuli-Kween transmission line, marking a significant advancement in Uganda’s renewable energy transition. The project involves constructing 80 km of high-voltage transmission lines and two substations, enabling the evacuation of 250 MW of renewable energy. This initiative aligns with Uganda’s Third National Development Plan (NDP III), aiming to expand energy access and support industrial growth. Gridworks, with a reputation for impactful energy projects across Africa, emphasizes its role in bridging gaps in power transmission infrastructure while fostering private-sector involvement.

Statistics & Insights:
The project will integrate 100 MW from hydropower plants and 150 MW from a solar park into Uganda’s grid, directly enhancing energy access for regions like Bulambuli and Kween, where electrification rates remain critically low at just 47%.

Future Implications:
This project could reduce grid losses, enhance energy stability, and attract further private investments in Uganda’s power infrastructure. Scheduled for completion in 2026, it will play a crucial role in unlocking renewable energy and supporting Uganda’s socio-economic development initiatives.
