Uganda’s Rural Mini-Grids Expand

Key Figures & Findings: The Beyond the Grid Fund for Africa (BGFA)  a multi-year funding initiative established to enhance access to clean off-grid energy solutions in sub-Saharan Africa has achieved a significant milestone by signing its 30th project agreement, partnering with NOA Energy Services Uganda a prominent mini-grid developer to expand rural electrification in Uganda. Supported by EUR 2.3 million in results-based financing, this initiative focuses on Bunjako Island in the Mpigi district, where eight containerized solar mini-grids will be deployed, to unlock and enhance sustainable energy access for underserved communities

Statistics & Insights: The project will deploy solar PV systems with a combined capacity of 1,030 kWp and lithium-based storage of 1,999 kWh, providing 3,300 energy service subscriptions. BGFA’s efforts across six African nations aim to provide electricity access to over 8.7 million people, reinforcing Uganda's journey toward universal electrification.

Future Implications: Once operational, the mini-grids could drastically improve living standards in rural Uganda, enhancing healthcare, economic growth, and energy access. By 2028, the model could serve as a blueprint for scaling rural electrification across Sub-Saharan Africa, supporting the region’s green energy transition.
