Uganda’s Solar Milestone by EAAIF

Key Figures & Findings:
In a groundbreaking move for Uganda's underserved West Nile region, the Emerging Africa & Asia Infrastructure Fund (EAAIF) has finalized $18 million in funding for a 20 MW solar photovoltaic (PV) plant. Managed by Ninety One under the Private Infrastructure Development Group (PIDG), this marks a critical step in addressing the region’s chronic energy shortages. AMEA Power, the project’s developer, is to bring clean energy to remote communities while advancing Uganda’s energy transition. This solar project—EAAIF’s 12th renewable energy initiative in Uganda—represents a significant milestone in bridging the nation’s power deficit and reducing reliance on polluting heavy fuel oil.
Statistics & Insights:
The solar plant is expected to power hundreds of thousands of households and businesses, complementing the electricity supply already provided to 159,000 people by EAAIF’s previous projects. The initiative will help Uganda move closer to its 2040 target of universal energy access, while also alleviating the strain on hydropower, which currently constitutes 80% of the nation’s energy generation.
Future Implications:
As Uganda accelerates its energy diversification, this project sets a precedent for sustainable development in remote regions. Once operational, it could act as a springboard for further investments in East Africa, as AMEA Power plans additional strategic ventures to enhance industrial and economic growth across the region.
