UNIDO, EU Launch Nigeria Hydro Plan

Key Figures & Findings: The United Nations Industrial Development Organisation (UNIDO), in collaboration with the European Union (EU), has launched the Small Hydro Power Development for Agro-Industry Use in Nigeria (SHP-DAIN) project to strengthen energy access for the agricultural sector in Nigeria. The initiative aims to expand food value chains, enhance productivity, and stimulate rural development through renewable energy. The SHP-DAIN project targets all six geopolitical zones. It includes capacity-building efforts for policymakers, developers, and financial institutions, involving the Federal Ministries of Agriculture, Trade and Industry, and other actively engaged stakeholders.

Statistics & Insights: The EU is financing the SHP initiative with €5,000 (approx. $5,375). The Nigerian Energy Support Programme has already trained over 100 developers in solar technologies, laying a foundation for renewable energy growth. The SHP-DAIN project will harness Nigeria’s abundant water resources to develop decentralized energy systems for agriculture and small businesses. The initiative is expected to bolster food security, create jobs, and promote low-carbon economic growth through increased SHP utilization. However, institutional knowledge gaps, project financing, and grid infrastructure pose significant challenges.

Future Implications: If fully scaled, the SHP-DAIN project could enhance Nigeria’s renewable energy mix by advancing small hydropower generation in rural and semi-urban areas. This transition would help decrease dependence on the grid, improve irrigation systems, and support Nigeria’s long-term food security and carbon reduction targets. Training for stakeholders and engagement with the financial sector will be vital for attracting additional investments in small hydro and circular economy solutions by 2026 and beyond.
