Volkswagen Africa Expands Solar Capacity

Key Figures & Findings: Volkswagen Group Africa (VWA) has expanded its renewable energy capacity at the Kariega plant in South Africa, adding 3 MW of solar power to its grid. This expansion brings the total solar capacity to 5.9 MW. The Kariega facility produces the Polo and Polo Vivo models, serving both local and international markets, reflecting the company’s commitment to sustainable practices under its global "Go To Zero Environmental Strategy," which aims for carbon neutrality and aligns with the Paris Agreement. The solar expansion includes 12,097 photovoltaic panels across various parts of the facility, including the employee car park, and also the plant’s environmental impact has improved by 57.7% since 2010, incorporating measures that address unreliable electricity supply.
Statistics & Insights: The plant’s renewable energy usage increased from 1.5% in 2018 to 17.1% in 2023, saving 7,500 tons of CO₂ emissions annually. The company expects to reduce its reliance on fossil fuels by 23% by 2025.
Future Implications: If current trends continue, the Kariega plant could achieve zero environmental impact, setting a benchmark for the sustainable automotive manufacturing industry in Africa, by 2030
