Zambia Inks Deal with China for Solar Plants

Key Figures & Findings: In a landmark renewable energy agreement, Zambia has partnered with China Datang Corporation and ZESCO, Zambia’s state-owned electricity company, to develop three solar power plants. This deal, signed during the Forum on China-Africa Cooperation (FOCAC), will strengthen Zambia’s efforts to diversify its energy mix and reduce its dependence on hydropower, which currently supplies over 90% of its electricity. China Datang Corporation, a major player in global energy, will bring its expertise in renewable energy, helping Zambia tackle its recurring power shortages, particularly during droughts. The solar plants will be spread across Zambia and are expected to add a significant capacity to the nation’s power grid.

Statistics & Insights: The three solar plants will add over 600 MW to Zambia’s electricity grid, which will boost the country’s energy security. The project is expected to create hundreds of jobs during construction and help mitigate the ongoing issue of power cuts.

Future Implications: This collaboration highlights the growing importance of renewable energy in Zambia’s future. With improved energy capacity, Zambia will be better positioned to meet the demands of its increasing population and industrial sector, while also fostering economic growth through sustainable energy development.
