Zambia, Mozambique's Energy Deal

Key Figures & Findings: Zambia's ZESCO Limited and Mozambique's Electricidade de Moçambique (EDM) have inked an Inter-Utility Memorandum of Understanding (IUMoU) to develop the Mozambique-Zambia Interconnector (MOZA). This initiative aims to construct a 400 kV transmission line spanning approximately 376 kilometers, linking the Matambo Substation in Mozambique to the Chipata West Substation in Zambia. The project is projected to cost $411.5 million and seeks to bolster energy security and facilitate electricity trade within the Southern African Development Community (SADC).

Statistics & Insights: The MOZA project is expected to enhance the transmission capacity within the Southern African Power Pool (SAPP), promoting regional energy integration. The signing took place during the 2025 Zambia International Mining and Energy Conference (ZIMEC) in Kitwe.

Future Implications: Upon completion, the interconnector could facilitate increased cross-border electricity trading, potentially leading to economic growth and improved energy access in both nations.
