Zambia, YEO Start 100MW Solar Project

Key Figures & Findings: Zambia has commenced construction on the first phase of a 100 MW solar and battery energy storage project in Choma District as part of its broader goal to add 1,000 MW of new capacity to the national grid by the end of 2025. The project, led by Turkish energy company YEO Teknoloji Enerji ve Endustri AS and local independent power producer GEI Power Limited, involves the installation of 50 MW of solar power and 20 MW of battery storage. During the groundbreaking ceremony, Energy Minister Makozo Chikote emphasized the need for fast-tracked delivery, job creation for local communities, and strong infrastructure stewardship. Power generated will be sold to ZESCO Limited, Zambia’s state-owned electricity utility, under a long-term power purchase agreement.
Statistics & Insights: The Cooma Solar Plant is expected to deliver 50 MW of solar energy and 20 MW of battery capacity in its first phase. Zambia aims to achieve 1,000 MW of new grid capacity additions by the end of 2025 to address rising electricity demand.
Future Implications: If completed as scheduled, the project could boost Zambia’s renewable energy contribution and help strengthen grid reliability by 2025. Success could also enhance private sector participation in Zambia’s clean energy sector.
