Zambia, Zimbabwe Revive Batoka Project

Key Figures & Findings: Zambia and Zimbabwe are renewing their efforts to secure financing for the long-delayed $5 billion Batoka Gorge hydropower project, as both countries face deepening electricity shortages and climate-induced volatility. The Zambezi River Authority (ZRA), co-managed by both nations and also responsible for operating the Kariba Dam, has activated a resource mobilization task force to secure investor interest over the next 12 to 18 months. According to ZRA CEO Munyaradzi Munodawafa, investor engagement will depend heavily on global market sentiment and bilateral commitments.

Statistics & Insights: The Batoka Gorge hydropower plant is designed to add 2,400MW to the regional grid. Both countries aim to finalize new investor commitments and select EPC bidders by September 2025.

Future Implications: If investor confidence holds and financing terms are secured, construction could commence in 2026, potentially easing southern Africa’s power supply strain by 2030.
