Zimbabwe, IDBZ Launch 5MW Solar

Key Figures & Findings: The Infrastructure and Development Bank of Zimbabwe (IDBZ), in collaboration with the Gutu Rural District Council (GRDC), has launched a 5MW solar power project to be constructed at Berry Springs and Wheatlands Farms in Gutu District, Masvingo Province. The project is managed by Chatsworth Energy (Private) Limited, a Special Purpose Vehicle (SPV) created by IDBZ. The initiative spans 15 hectares, situated 8 km north of Gutu-Mupandawana. It is expected to be connected to the nearby 33/11 kV substation managed by the Zimbabwe Electricity Transmission and Distribution Company (ZETDC). The initiative is being funded by both IDBZ and Agence Française de Développement (AFD), with feasibility and environmental studies carried out by SOWITEC Kenya and MAZEDECK Ventures (Zimbabwe).

Statistics & Insights: The Gutu Solar Plant aims to generate approximately 9,125 MWh of electricity annually, enough to power over 3,000 rural households. The substation is situated just 1 km from the plant, minimizing infrastructure costs and transmission losses. A Grid Impact  Assessment (GIA) by ZETDC confirmed strong grid compatibility, while the full feasibility study—co-funded by IDBZ and the Agence Française de Développement (AFD)—was led by SOWITEC Kenya and MAZEDECK Ventures of Zimbabwe. The plant is projected to reduce annual carbon emissions by over 6,500 metric tons.

Future Implications: Once operational, the plant could significantly increase local energy security, cut fossil fuel reliance, and stabilize supply to surrounding communities. With tendering set to close by April 28, construction could commence in the second half of 2025, accelerating Zimbabwe’s transition to decentralized clean energy systems.
