Zimbabwe Miners Secure 200MW Solar Deal

Key Figures & Findings:
Grid Africa, a prominent energy company specializing in renewable solutions, has finalized an agreement with miners in Zimbabwe to develop 200MW of solar power. This initiative, valued at approximately $180 million, is set to address the ongoing energy challenges that have cost mining operations an estimated $500 million in lost revenue. Grid Africa’s CEO, Norman Moyo, emphasized the phased approach for efficiency and scalability, highlighting the company’s commitment to sustainable and impactful energy solutions for the mining sector. Also, a key partnership with Africa GreenCo Group was signed to manage the delivery of power generated under this project.
Statistics & Insights:
Zimbabwe currently generates only 1,258.5 MW against a seasonal demand of up to 2,200 MW, with Kariba producing just 124.5 MW due to irregular rainfall. The agreement includes 100 MW for mines in the Midlands Province, costing $70 million. The government targets 2,100 MW from renewables by 2030, with an interim goal of 1,100 MW by 2025.
Future Implications:
If completed as planned by 2027, these initiatives could help reduce Zimbabwe's dependence on hydroelectric power from countries such as Mozambique and South Africa, stabilizing the energy supply for the mining sector.
