Zimplats Commissions 35MW Solar in Zimbabwe

Key Figures & Findings: Zimbabwe Platinum Mines (Zimplats), a subsidiary of South African mining giant Impala Platinum Holdings, has commissioned the first 35 MW phase of its planned 185 MW solar plant alongside a newly expanded 38 MW smelter at the Selous Metallurgical Complex. The commissioning event was presided over by President Emmerson Mnangagwa, who highlighted the projects as pivotal for Zimbabwe’s industrialisation and sustainability goals. Zimplats operates one of Zimbabwe’s largest platinum mining and processing operations and has been investing heavily in energy self-sufficiency to stabilise its operations amid ongoing power shortages.

Statistics & Insights: The $37 million solar plant will meet approximately 8% of Zimplats’ energy needs. Future phases will add 150 MW, bringing total solar capacity to 185 MW.

Future Implications: When complete, the solar portfolio could substantially reduce Zimplats’ reliance on grid power and lower its carbon footprint by 2027. It is also expected to set a precedent for large-scale renewable energy adoption in Zimbabwe’s mining sector.
